The story of how Kuul accommodation in Virtsu came about

For the past 11 years, I’ve been the proud owner of a small Estonian island called Viirelaid. Over time, I’ve carefully developed this special place, and about three years ago, I had the inspiration to install a glass dome—similar to the one you’re experiencing now. The only difference is that on Viirelaid, the dome floats on a platform over water, while this one sits firmly on land.

Each summer, Viirelaid welcomes numerous visitors who are captivated by the experience. Many approach me with enthusiasm, asking, “This overnight stay is incredible! Have you considered building something similar elsewhere in Estonia?”

I’ve always responded politely with, “I’ll consider it and get back to you.” Truthfully, I’ve been hesitant to create competition for myself or establish similar accommodations elsewhere where I couldn’t personally guarantee the quality and maintenance. So the idea remained just that—floating in the background.

Everything changed when a guest named Hegert stayed in the Viirelaid dome. When he made the same suggestion, something unexpected happened. For reasons I can’t fully explain, I heard myself reply, “Why not? Let’s order them together and make it happen!”

We ordered two glass “Moon Houses” and began searching for land to place them. This part proved unexpectedly challenging—the domes exceeded 20 square meters and didn’t quite resemble traditional houses, so none of the local municipalities would grant building permits. It was quite a predicament: we had the domes but nowhere to install them.

They sat in storage for about a year while Hegert’s life took a new direction. He first moved to Bali and then to the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. Meanwhile, I continued searching for a suitable location without much success.

Finally, out of frustration, I said, “I’ll just ship these domes to you in Thailand, and we’ll set them up there instead.” What happened next was completely unexpected.

This simple decision sparked an idea to develop an entire hotel project in Thailand. It’s remarkable how a small sequence of events can give birth to such a significant venture.

But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. Instead, I wanted to explain why the domes are in Virtsu and why you’re here now. While shipping to Thailand would have involved significant transportation costs, I fortunately discovered an amazing plot of land here at the edge of a nature reserve where the local authorities permitted accommodation facilities. So this is where they ended up.

For those who didn’t know, Virtsu itself was once an island called Werder Island. So the island saga continues. In any case, we worked hard and created just this type of unique accommodation.

Beneath this piece of land lies an ancient energy portal. Whether it’s because of this or not, I’ve found myself rejuvenated here and inspired with new ideas for exciting things to do in my life. For me, this is truly a “relax zone” – I hope that for you and your companion it’s also an awesome retreat and that you’ll leave with fresh ideas.

Please let us know how you enjoyed your stay with us and if there’s anything we could improve.
