What to do and where to go at Virtsu?

It is possible to book a birdwatching tour with guide Peeter Vissaku on site. The tour should be booked a week in advance. The price starts at 35 euros/h and lasts approximately 1-2 hours.

Vanaluubi Recreation Area – 400 m

Bring your SUP boards and fishing rods from the shed, use the KUUL STAY boat by the sea, or just go swimming and enjoy the sun. The Vanaluubi bird observation tower is located at the rest area.

Virtsu Manor Park – 1.4 km

The park was established in the 18th century, when Karl Thure von Helwig built the main building of the manor.

The main building and many outbuildings have been destroyed, but the Baroque gatehouse can be seen and the old park paths with rows of trees have been restored in the park. 

Valeri Kirsi Museum of Vintage Vehicles – 1.9 km

Horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and automobiles from the last 200 years. The museum is open in the summer and if it is not open – call +372 5165288.

Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve and Puhtulaiu Educational Trail – 1.9 km

A short drive away, the nature reserve offers rich biodiversity and peaceful walking trails. The 8-shaped trail is marked with signposts and information boards.

From the tower located at the southwestern tip of the peninsula, you can especially observe the spring and autumn migration of waterfowl. On the trail, there is a memorial stone to the founder of the Puhtu Ornithological Station and the well-known ornithologist and conservationist Eerik Kumar, which was erected in 1987 by the sculptor A. Taniloo-Bogatkin at the Puhtu Ornithological Station.

Laelatu Wooded Meadow – 2.1 km

Botanically rich meadow with various plant species. Near the wooded meadow is the dam of the former narrow-gauge railway. In 1931-1968, the Virtsu-Rapla train line ran on the railway. The last passenger train left Virtsu on the evening of May 25, 1968 at 9:06 p.m.

Virtsu vassal castle – 2.5 km

The ruins of the Virtsu vassal castle are a short bike ride or walk away.

Virtsu Harbour – 2.6 km

Right in the heart of Virtsu, with a ferry connection to Muhu Island and a beautiful view of the sea.

Virtsu Lighthouse – 3 km

The current four-sided stone concrete tower was completed in 1951 (diameter 2.5 m, height 18 m, upper half red, lower half white).

Hanila Church and Museum – 7km

An 8-minute drive away is the local museum introducing the history and folk culture of the region, along with an old church and a picturesque park.

Paddle and golf – 8km

Sillukse airfield, skating bank – 12 km

A 15-minute drive away is the Sillukse bus stop, behind which there is a rubble quarry and from there the road leads to an airport built after the war, where no plane is known to have landed. The airport overlooks the sea, and offers an incredibly beautiful view of Muhu Island, the small islands and the Väina Sea. “Several films have been shot there, including “The Last Relic”, and a model of a monastery was also erected there.

Karuse Church Manor – 13 km

Karuse Church is one of the oldest religious buildings in Lääne County, built in the 1260s as a fortress church for the Livonian Order.

Vatla Manor and Castle Ruins – 13 km

Vatla Manor (German: Wattel) was a knight’s manor in the Karuse parish of Lääne County. The former manor house housed Vatla Primary School, which was closed in 2017. As of 2023, the Vatla Library operates in the main building of the manor.

Massu Riding Club – 13km

At Massu Horseback Riding Club, you can go on a 1-3 hour horseback ride in nature (30-60 euros/person), take a tour of the beautiful nature of Western Estonia by carriage/sleigh (20/40 euros/person) or have a picnic by the sea (May-September includes meals, photos. Takes place for min 4/max 8 people, 80 euros/person)
